 Ratanakiri province is located in the northeastern part of Cambodia. The northern border is adjacent to the Nakdolipi province of Laos. The eastern border is adjacent to Va Lay and Kantoum provinces of Vietnam. The western border is sharing with Stung Treng province and the southern border is sharing with Mondulkiri province in Cambodia. Ratanakiri province occupies about 12,000 square kilometers, the seventh largest of the 22 provinces of the whole country. Banlung, the name of the provincial capital town, is about 620 kilometers from the capital city of Phnom Penh. The Cambodian map and geographic description mentioned the province with a rain - forest and wild animals. There are 9 semi-nomadic ethnic groups, but also comprised different nationalities including Laotian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Khmer. Currently the majority of population is ethnic group.
Some modern development of the province commenced under the French occupation in the 19th century, and was accelerated in the 1950s, with the development of roads, gem mining, coffee and rubber plantations. At present the shifting cultivation of the general practice for the ethnic groups has been banned by the government and they are encouraged to develop agricultural farming on cashew nut in their villages;
